TAMILS VS SINGHALESE: THE PROTOTYPE OF THE INTERETHNIC AND INTER-RACIAL CONFLICTS
Journal Title: Revista Romana de Studii Eurasiatice - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Conflicts among the co-nationals and members of the same race generate acts of genocide. Their prototype is the racial conflict between tamils and singhalese in Sri Lanka. It has been lasting for 3000 years, and shows a paradox of the contemporany international law, in its fundamental chapter of the peoples’ rights to dispose of their fate. Actually the paradox consists in this: if each ethnic group asked for its self-determination, the states would crumble so that no efficient international structure could be possible. Initiated 1000 years before Christ, the conflict between the tamils and singhalese has been exacerbated, after the governments in New Delhi and Colombo, respectively, tried to enforce as a rule a unique language in their countries: hindi and, respectively, singaly. The nationalistic action has increased in India, determining and nourishing the conflict in Sri Lanka, while the international efforts to mediate the conflict have failed. It still remains a virtual source of genocide and it has been registered since as such 1986 in the agenda of the International Alert organization that has already participated with two missions in Sri Lanka.
