TEACHING MATHEMATICS TO LEARNERS-REPRESENTATIVES OF DIGITAL GENERATION

Abstract

Today, students going to elementary school are representatives of the digital generation, who are living in the two worlds – real and virtual. Virtual reality creates certain properties in children that need to be taken into account in the development of teaching methods and technologies. Scientists observe worsening of attention, memory, thinking and log- ical processing of information in modern children. It is obvious that the school should offer means for the development of cognitive processes that are needed by a person for effective life in the world. The content of mathematics, as a subject of study, has powerful capabilities for the formation of students’ methods of mental activity, logical thinking, development of attention, imagination, perception and memory. On the other hand, in order to train students of the digital generation effectively, it is necessary to implement teaching methods and technologies based on their features and correcting their certain weaknesses. These are, above all, a habit of high levels of stimulation, bright and dynamic picture, and the inability of logical processing of information. This feature of modern children should be taken into account in the printing of textbooks and manuals, as well as by providing online support that enables the teacher to use multimedia presentations, interactive tasks, etc. and satisfies the students’ need for action in a virtual environment. Significant features of the digital generation are the deterioration of attention, memory, and logical thinking, which negatively affect the quality of perception, awareness and memorization of educational information. The deterioration in the processing of information in children of the digital generation can be corrected by means of colour highlighting, double constructions in the rules of the text, as well as arrows and dots in the decoding schemes presented in the textbook, in the activity book, as well as in the multimedia presentation to the lesson. In the multimedia presentation to the lesson, there is a possibility to influence more effectively the processes of attention, perception of educational information and its analysis due to animation effects. In this way, we help the student to focus on the essential features of educational infor- mation, to identify the main thing, to carry out a thorough analysis, and, by presenting the decision-making schemes, we guide his/her activities in assimilating this information. Based on the desire of the children of the digital generation to be always the winners, their inability to delay the pleas- ure and the reluctance to perform drills, the system of educational tasks should provide students with the achievement of success in the performance of mathematical activity. We can ensure the success of each student by the stretching of study time for a specific issue of the program. In par- ticular, doing the following: including preparatory tasks long before the study of a particular issue; gradual modification and complication of those tasks; the formation of separate operations that constitute a new action to be introduced later; studying the new material by analyzing the process of solving problems offered to students at the preparatory stage; their transformation/composition, resulting in the formulation of a conclusion on a new concept, or the relationship of mathe- matical objects, or the discovery by students of a new method of action; acquaintance with new material by complication of preparatory exercises and studying the dependence of the previously studied method of action according to the changed conditions; the use of all kinds of visual supports for performance – memory notes, reference notes, decoding schemes and multimedia presentations, in which, with the help of animation effects, the pupils’ attention is drawn to certain moments of tentative activity; and continuous repetition of previously understood concepts and modes of action.
