Technical and economical considerations of new coal processing technologies
Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2010, Vol 64, Issue 11
Abstract
Exhaustion of hydrocarbon natural resources (oil and natural gas) and unforeseeable fluctuations in their prices result essential changes in global structure of primary energy use. This can be significantly accelerated in result of intensive increase of needs for prime energy sources especially in Chinese and India. Taking above into consideration – comeback to the most widespread over the world energy source – coal – seems to be inevitable. According to the prognosis the resources of coal are sufficient for 200 – 300 years. For reasonable coal management a necessary condition is developing of new highly rational and effective in use technologies, so called “clean coal technologies” focused on maximum use of chemical energy of such kind fuel, need integration of mining, power sector and chemical industry. One of the most important methods of coal conversion is gasification. Coal gasification is effective method for syngas producing, which can be use for electric power generation (and heat) or as raw material for chemicals production, including hydrogen, methanol and liquid fuels. In paper a new direction of clean coal technologies are discussed, taking into account availability of fossil fuels resources. Problems of energy resources and needs in Poland and over the world are indicated. Problems of clean coal technologies implementation in power sector and chemical industry over the world and in Poland are also discussed. Particularly various coal gasification processes for electricity generation, liquid fuels, hydrogen and methanol are discussed. Furthermore economics of electricity generation and chemical production with use of coal technologies are described.
