Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: To assess possibility of olfactory examination in children aged less than 5 years old as well as to determine odors being correctly recognized by Polish children which could be used in screening olfactory examination. Assessment of the olfactory identification impact on body mass index (BMI). Material and Method: There were researched 43 Polish children aged 2,9-4,8 years without olfactory disturbances or illnesses influenced on smell in anamnesis and during ENT examination. Olfactory functioning was tested with psychophysical tool, using 21 odors being chosen among stimuli used in the most common olfactory tests. Over 86% of the subjects have completed successfully the olfactory test. Results: Six out of 21 tested odors (bubblegum, lemon, cola, mint, toffee, fish) were correctly identified by at least 75% of the children. The odorants could be useful for olfactory screening test in Polish children. Average olfac-tory test result was 13 odors correctly recognized. There was a correlation between number of odor identifications and age of the subjects. The olfactory test results were not correlated with gender and body mass index. Conclusions: The olfactory examination with psychophysical methods can be used in diagnosis of young children nevertheless it requires to be adjusted to age of the subjects. The study presents an example of the olfactory screen-ing test based on odors which are mostly recognized by Polish children aged less than 5-years-old
