THE ALGORITHM OF METODICAL ACTIONS OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE SELF-LEARNING WHILE WRITING
Journal Title: Науковий вісник Південноукраїнського національного педагогічного університету імені К. Д. Ушинського - Year 2016, Vol 111, Issue 4
Abstract
The article focuses on such a kind of foreign language self-learning as writing of profession-oriented reports and their further representing in front of the audience. In this research an attempt is made to settle the contradiction between requirements imposed for the level of proficiency in a foreign language of university graduates and the number of the classroom hours assigned for classes in this subject. Therefore, new training methods are needed which could develop students’ ability to acquire knowledge independently and to use it in their future professional activity. One of such methods, in our opinion, is foreign language self-learning while writing. The idea of improvement of foreign-language communicative skills through written speech creativity is not new in language teaching. In this regard, it is necessary to mention the works by G. Bedrosova, T. Glazunova, T. Enaliyeva, T. Ilyina, L.Kolker, I. Melnik and others. However, in none of them two equivalent tasks were solved at the same time: 1) creation by students of the independent statement on the basis of business and scientific literature in a foreign language; 2) correct linguistic representation in outer written and then oral speech of the thoughts arising during acquisition of new information. Writing of the thematic reports is a kind of independent scientific speech creativity when a person who prepares it does not mount the text from the selected works of other authors, but creates his or her own one in which he or she can agree or disagree with some opinions or offer solutions of the discussed problems. At the same time students improve their linguistic skills of written speech. The offered algorithm is based on the structure of foreign-language self-learning and on didactic logic of the organization of the process of independent acquisition and use of knowledge while writing. While performing methodical actions, students learn: to select thematic material from primary sources; to comprehend it; to connect new thematic and linguistic knowledge with the learned ones before; to represent new facts using substantial arguments; to carry out the critical analysis of other authors’ views; to express prospects of the development of the ideas represented in the report; to generalize represented ideas and to draw corresponding conclusions; to make a report orally in front of the audience; to answer the listeners’ questions; to estimate results of their own educational activity. In general, the research shows that the represented algorithm of methodical actions reflects real steps of the students towards the improvement of linguistic basics of the language as well as their general and professional knowledge.
