The analysis of deaths of patients requiring intensive care in the Emergency Department University Hospital in Bialystok in years: 2006-2008

Abstract

The effectiveness determinant of the emergency medical system is to reduce the early mortality rates. In many countries where the medical emergency system functioning longer than in Poland these lower indicators of death have been achieved. The mortality problem in ED in our country hospitals is still not well recognize, that's why researching of that point seems to be very important.[b]Materials and Methods[/b]. Retrospective analysis of patients death in a population treated on ED in University Hospital in Bialystok during years 2006 to 2008.[b]Results[/b]. From 5428 hospitalized sick persons the examination group consist 115 dead patients including 62.6% – men and 37.4% – women. The average age is 69.06 ± 15.68 years. 65.2% deaths concern people aged 65 years and above. 11.3% consist 13 death patients hospitalized from injury causes. Others 102 (88.7%) are not traumatic cases. The most dominating in the midst of the initial diagnosis are cases connected with: respiratory diseases (91.2%), cardiovascular illnesses (91.2%) and also conditions after cardiac arrest (68.6%). The indicator of early mortality in testing years are adequately 2.17% in 2006, 1.57% in 2007 and 1.39% in 2008.[b]Conclusions[/b]. The early mortality in ED concern in bigger part men in elderly age and that indicating the need of modification the prevented, diagnostic and therapy procedures in this group of patients. The most common death cases in ED are treated by causes of cardiopulmonary failure, respiratory and cardiac arrest. This confirm that diseases of cardiovascular system are major risks for population of Podlasie. The high average of patients age who died in the ED may confirm the aging process of the Polish society. Decreasing rate of early mortality in examination years may indicate growing effectiveness of emergency medical system functioning in Podlasie.
