THE APPLICATION OF THE ROUGH SETS THEORY FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS FACTORS INFLUENCING SURFACE FATIGUE LIFE

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 234, Issue 6

Abstract

Fatigue wear is a kind of wear when the local loss of cohesion and subsequent material decrements are caused by material fatigue in the effect of cyclic action of contact stresses in surface layers of joint friction elements. Initiation, development, and propagation of fatigue cracks (wear by pitting) take place in such a surface layer. Typical machine parts that are a subject of fatigue wear are rolling bearings and gear wheels. The surface fatigue life of these machine elements can be determined by a great number of design, technological and service factors. This paper presents the application of one of the machine learning methods for the analysis of test results of the surface fatigue life, i.e. decision rules generated based on of the rough sets theory. Test results of life and surface roughness of 60 bearing rollers NU309 were analysed. Thus, the presented example shows that the decision rules generation method based on the rough sets theory can be used for the analysis of tests results concerning the surface fatigue life, but the interpretation of its operation results always requires a critical evaluation of an expert.
