THE ARTISTIC AND IDEOLOGI CAL INNOVATION OF THE POEM «CHRIST ON THE MOUNT OF OLI VES» BY GERARD DE NERVAL

Abstract

The article deals with the poem (in five sonnets) «Christ on the Mount of Olives» by the French romantic writer Gerard de Nerval. This artwork is part of the larger text — the cycle of sonnets «Chimeras», which is acknowledged by scientists as the main poetic work of the author. The purpose of this article is an attempt to bring the specificity of Nerval in the contemporary cultural and artistic context, as well as the efforts to show the «visionary» of his artistic heritage, in which we can see the peculiar «matrix» of the state of human consciousness of the era after the Second World War. The article focuses on the innovativeness of the artist from France, on the fact that he is the first in the world literature to work on a number of themes, ideas, motifs that became the norm in the culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, and his mature creativity, presented by the poem «Christ on the Mount of Olives», it is quite expedient to interpret it as a prototype of literature of the following centuries. Moreover, for several decades in the world of literary criticism (in the end, as in cultural studies), the idea of the decisive importance of the art of the nineteenth century becomes more and more dominant. In particular, the thesis that the development of culture, public consciousness, and even the entire human history of the 20th and 21st centuries is rooted in the era of romanticism has long been formed. The prominent proof of this is the creativity of a number of innovators (Redon, Baudelaire, Whitman, Poe), ahead of their time, drawing out a «plan-notebook» for the development of the culture of the following centuries. To such innovators belongs also Nerval, who is still poorly represented in domestic literary criticism: for all time, there was only one candidate’s dissertation devoted to his work, and no doctoral dissertation.
