The Artistic Profession and Its Unique Network Relationships in the Context of Design Management

Abstract

The authors argue for a proposition that design management is among the key reasons why so many artists develop collaborative networks. The paper is divided into a theoretical and a practical section. The first section thus addresses the issue in theoretical terms, giving unfoldin rationale for networking and defining what design management essentially is in the first place, and then describing most common motivations for networking among artists, such transaction costs, relationship benefits, or learning, and highlighting the key role played by individual decisions and the properties of specific collaborative frameworks. The practical part of the paper presents the findings of a participant observation of two types of artists. Based on these findings, case studies of two Polish artists are offered: one working in public space sculpture, and the other engaged in the design of rehabilitation products.
