Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction. In the incidence of the symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) a therapeutic procedure comprises noninvasive and reversible methods. This is due to the multifactorial etiology of such disorders and a spontaneous regression of ailments observed in some cases. However, the diagnosis of orthopaedic balance of the masticatory organ warrants the application of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures aimed at restoring normal intra-articular relations and improving the masticatory muscle function. In these circumstances an occlusal repositioning splint (RS) is the major therapeutic tool.Aim of the study. To assess the therapeutic efficacy of occlusal repositioning splint applied in the internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint associated with disc displacement.Material and methods. The study material covered a group of 40 patients, aged 16-55, qualified to be treated with use of occlusal repositioning splint. Based on clinical and additional (radiologic and condylographic) examinations of the mandible therapeutic position was set and the splint for a 24-h use was produced. On control visits the of masticatory organ function was clinically assessed.Results. A statistically significant decrease in pain ailments was observed. The pattern and range of mandible movement were improved in patients with the joint disc displacement without reduction, as well as sound symptoms on mandible movement were reduced in cases of joint disc displacement with reduction.Conclusion. The application of the occlusal repositioning splint proved to be an effective method used in specified cases of functional disorders of temporomandibular joints.
