Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

The Bolshevik model of church-state relations included the uncompromising struggle against religion, church and believers, the approval of atheistic society. Chaotic Soviet administration intervention in church activities during the establishment of the Bolshevik regime soon transformed into a large-scale attack on religion and religious institutions. At the beginning of 1920 there was a creation of a special unit by religious organizations from the government; the desired adjustment mechanism of state-church relations was launched. One of the important elements of this mechanism was antireligious propaganda, which has the aim of establishing a communist outlook by extrusion of religion and the church from all spheres of public life. Completing the organizational and structural formation of the Bolshevik model of church-state relations in April 1926 the Union of the Godless was founded, which was the part of large propaganda and tool of practical implementation of theUnion’s anti-religious policies. Based on archival sources, historical literature and periodicals the role and importance of the Union of the Godless as a source of atheistic process among the population in the implementation of anti-religious propaganda is studied. Detailed analysis of the state-party priorities of the religious policy and labeling contents and features of Godless society give reason to define the existence chronological limits and to identify major periods of Godless Union activities. The attention is paid on factors of amplitude changes in the nature of church-state relations during the period of 1920- 1940, which allows us to trace connection among processes of the Soviet totalitarian state formation with organizational, structural and functional changes, which the Atheists’ League experienced during its existence.
