The Basics of German educational policy in the ocupied east Galicia 1941 – 1944: on the materials of Drogobych region

Abstract
In the article, based on documentary materials concerning the territory of Drohobych region of the Ukrainian SSR, the authors attempt to analyze the principles of educational policy of the Nazi occupation administration in the Galician district during 1941–1944. The system of management of the ¿ eld of education in the province, approaches of the occupation authorities to the formation of the educational structure, network educational institutions, content of the educational process are characterized in the article. The centralized nature of formation of education management authorities, which was introduced from Germany, but experienced in Poland between two world wars are shown in the article. The article describes the factors that determined the speci¿ cs of the German educational policy in Eastern Galicia: it was interpreted by the Germans not as an occupied territory, but as a region directly subordinated to the Reich; most of this territory belonged once to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so, Nazi Germany considered itself its successor; the Ukrainians, who constituted the majority of the population of Eastern Galicia (70%), had deep traditions of national-cultural life. Therefore, the occupants allowed Ukrainians to have not only primary but also secondary schools, and teacher’s seminaries. The occupation power was favorable to the Polish population in Galicia, but did not create Polish-language gymnasiums, did not allow the activities of cultural and educational organizations.
