Journal Title: Roczniki Bieszczadzkie - Year 2012, Vol 20, Issue 1

Abstract

Research was carried out during swarming period and hibernation seasons in crevice-type sandstone Jaskinia Mroczna cave (alt. 770 m) in Kornuty Reserve (Beskid Niski Mountains, southern Poland). The cave is used by bats as hibernation and swarming site and during intermediate period as resting place. In the entrance of the cave during swarming activity between 2005 and 2010 685 bats (Table 1) from the twelve species were caught in mist nets: lesser horseshoe bat Rhinolophus hipposideros, greater mouse-eared bat Myotis myotis (Borkhausen 1797), Bechstein’s bat Myotis bechsteinii (Kuhl 1817), Brandt’s bat Myotis brandtii (Eversmann 1845), whiskered bat M. mystacinus (Kuhl 1817) sensu stricto, Alcathoe bats Myotis alcathoe Helversen & Hellen 2001, Geoffroy’s bat Myotis emarginatus (Geoffroy 1806), Daubenton’s bat M. daubentonii (Kuhl 1817), northern bat Eptesicus nilssonii (Keyserling & Blasius 1839), serotine bat Eptesicus serotinus (Schreber, 1774), brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus (Linnaeus 1758) and Barbastelle bat Barbastella barbastellus (Schreber 1774). The most numerous species were R. hipposideros and P. auritus comprising respectively 24.4% and 25.3% of the captured bats. Relatively numerous were also M. daubentonii (11.7%), M. myotis (9.8%), M. emarginatus (9.8%) and M. bechsteinii (8.2%). Remaining species were found in small numbers. Sex ratio was male-biased in all species. During hibernation period between 2005 and 2011 in the Jaskinia Mroczna cave 1482 (Table 2) bats from the following species or groups of species were recorded: lesser horseshoe bat Rhinolophus hipposideros, mouse-eared bat Myotis myotis, whiskered bat Myotis mystacinus sensu lato, Daubenton’s bat M. daubentonii and brown long-eared bat Plecotus auritus. From mystacinus group Myotis brandtii and M. mystacinus sensu stricto were recorded. The most numerous species was R. hipposideros, comprising 95.5% of all recorded bats. Relatively large number of M. myotis (6.8% of the total) was also noted. The remaining species were found in much smaller numbers. A strong increase in the number of R. hipposideros was observed (Fig. 1). Jaskinia Mroczna cave is the most important hibernaculum and swarming site in the Beskid Niski Mountains.
