THE BIODEX SYSTEM USED IN THE EVALUATION OF THE PROPORTION OF MUSCLE TORQUE AND HAMSTRING MUSCLE INJURY RISK

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2015, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The greatest number of sport-related injuries, connected with the involvement in most of the sports is noted in lower limbs. One of the preventive measures employed to protect competitors against the injuries of the knee joint structures and muscles affecting this joint, is control of the asymmetry between the agonist and antagonist muscles. For the knee joint, the flexor-extensor torque ratio is calculated. The aim of the study was to calculate the flexor-extensor torque ratio with the increase in the angular velocity in male and female athletes. Material and methods. The sample comprised two groups of subjects: 16 female football players and 12 male judokas. The study was carried out in the certified Laboratory of Biomechanical Analyses of the University School of Physical Education in Wroclaw (ISO 9001:2009). For the measurements of peak torque in extensor and flexor muscles of the knee joint under static (for 75° and 30° angles respectively) and isokinetic conditions (with angular velocities of 60°/s and 120°/s) the BIODEX SYSTEM 4 PRO device was used. Torque asymmetry between the agonist and antagonist muscles in the knee joint was calculated using flexor-extensor torque ratio.Results. The study showed no statistically significant increase of the flexor-extensor torque ratio with the increase in angular velocity in the group of male judokas. Conversely, in the group of female football players a systematic, statistically significant increase was noted, reflected by the results of the measurements taken under static conditions and at the angular velocity of 60°/s.Conclusions. The increase in the flexor-extensor torque ratio values in the group of female football players indicates that, contrary to the earlier reported findings, this phenomenon can also occur in female athletes. Surprisingly, such an increase was not observed in the group of judokas. The increase in in the flexor-extensor torque ratio values is should reduce the risk of non-contact injuries of hamstring muscles.
