The broader Movement of national-political Affirmation and Emancipation of the Romanians in the Soviet Empire: The Popular Front of Moldova

Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2009, Vol 15, Issue 1

Abstract

The article analyzes the historical context in which it was born the most important socio-political organization of the Romanians in the USSR: the Popular Front of Moldova, on May 20, 1989. There are presented organizations that joined the FPM, the Congress of the constitution, implementation of the program adopted and its essential demands. Among these demands are mentioned: the introduction of "Moldovan" language as the official language and the return to the Latin alphabet, the national anthem and coat of arms of Moldova, organization and debates of the International Conference "Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and its consequences on Bessarabia" held in 26-28 June 1991, proclamation of Moldova's independence, in August 27, 1991. The author is convinced that in years to come, the progressive elite, which made and distributed the Popular Front of Moldova program, will find the resources to obtain moral and political conditions to legitimate it’s claims, to be released from the anachronistic remnants of the old communist nomenclature and the subordination to Moscow, joining in the Euro-Atlantic structures.
