The category of speech precedence and specifics of its expression in the English literature

Abstract
In this article, the author analyzes the verbal and non-verbal means of expression of the time precedence in the English literature. In particular there is an analysis of dialogical speech and usage of the aforementioned means of expressing the precedence category. In literary texts the functions of the dialogue are the following: stylization of the language and description of the characters’ features. The category of time precedence can be expressed verbally. In this case, the grammatical time forms are used. They are Past Indefinite, Present Perfect, Past Continuous, Participle II Passive, Past Simple. They are the basis for the functional and semantic categories. The precedence is divid- ed into two kinds, such as: distant and non-distant. These kinds of precedence are associated with a certain point in time. Secondary means of expressing the category of precedence are non-verbal. They can be named as the periphery of the functional and semantic categories. The non-verbal tem- poral precedence is expressed through the usage of demonstrative pronouns, nouns, adjectives of time and adverbs of time and place. The key feature of this type of precedence is its ability to express an unaltered precedence, which is associated with the moment of speech.
