Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. Cortisol (C) demonstrates catabolic properties, and testosterone (T) an-ti-catabolic and anabolic action, hence, ratio of blood levels TC may reflex eąuilibrium be-tween anabolic and catabolic processes. The purpose of this study was to examine acute effect of3-round sparing boxing contest undergoing in the morning or evening on changes of T/C ratio, the variable considered as a marker of state of anabolic-catabolic eąuilibrium. Materiał and methods. Twelve elitę boxers of various body mass were subjected to thy study On the separated days of training camp they were fighting once in the morning, 10:00-11:30, (day A) and once in the evening, 19:00-20:30 (day B). Capillary blood was sampled three times, at 8:00 h, and prior to contest (-5 min) and following it (+5 min) to determine serum T and C levels, and post-contest blood lactate (LA). Results. According to the diurnal rhythm mean pre-contests C and T were lower than those in the morning of day A and B, and the pre-contest values before noon (day A) were higher compared those in the afternoon (day B). Day A exertion brought about significant rise of C and T and non significant (by 14%) decrease of T/C. Day B effort resulted in significant rise of C, smali (by 8%) increase in T, and significant decrease in T/C. Mean end-exercise T/C was higher (by 21%) on day A in comparison to that on day B. Conclusions. Despite similar intensities of exertions undergone on various daytime, evening contests resulted in higher decline of T/C.
