The Cinematic Construction of the City: An Approach to Contemporary Representations of Medellín
Journal Title: Trilogía Ciencia Tecnología Sociedad - Year 2019, Vol 11, Issue 21
Abstract
This article is an appropriation of the approach to cinema proposed by the philosopher Fredric Jameson to question the new forms of representation that appear in recent films related to Medellín. The theoretical exercise is based on Victor Gaviria's work of the nineties and its continuities and ruptures with three recent films of the city: Mambo Cool, Los Nadie, and Matar a Jesús, pointing out transitions in the local politics of the image, its moral value, and its meaning as an urban project. Cinematographic representation contributes to the understanding of a specific social context, revealing itself as a symptomatic record of its inherent contradictions. More than a study that exhausts the exercise of analysis, it is an essay in which a non-conclusive, open and in constant process of constitution approach is suggested.
