The article is dedicated to study of the problem of the comic in the short story „Surgery” by Vladislav Vančura, a famous Czech prosaist and playwright of the first half of the XX century. The short story pertains to the genres describing customs. It focuses on prosiness , privacy of two doctors in a provincial town of Orlici. However, things that passed between them go far beyond the scope of commonness and may be defined as a humorous anecdote. The author traces a story of two enemies who become friends in the long run. The comparative description of the two characters, the history of their quarrel and reconciliation have not only vital, but also literary origin in the short story „Mr. Rysanek and Mr. Schlegl” (Pan Rysanek a pan Schlegl) by Jan Neruda. The story by V. Vančura is viewed in the aspect of its dialogueness. These two works have very much in common: the subject, comparative characteristics of the antagonists, the futility of a reason that gave rise to the face-off, the fortuity of a reason that gave rise to the reconciliation, etc. At the same time, there are considerable differences between the stories. The story by J. Neruda is a satirical work meantime the comic principle underlies the story „Surgery” by V. Vančura manifesting in discordance between form and substance.
