PECULIARITIES OF TRANSLATING UKRAINIAN PREPOSITIONAL EQUIVALENTS OF WORDS INTO GERMAN

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 18

Abstract

Modern linguistic studies more and more focus on the elements of transitional levels in the language system. Based on a number of linguistic facts it is assumed that different languages undergo similar development processes, which results in arising transitional language units in such languages. Equivalents of words are an example of the language dynamics in synchrony. Such units do not belong to any structural language categories and are considered in linguistics to be elements of transitional levels in the language system. The illustration of the dynamics in the lexical-semantic system is the fact that according to some criteria the equivalents of the word are classified as words, and according to others as word phrases or idioms. The significant achievement of the Ukrainian linguistics is the development of methodology by A. Luchyk, which enables us to describe equivalents in this paper. Prepositional equivalents of words are one of the largest groups of equivalents of words. They function at the level between lexical prepositions and free word combinations. In this article, the term ‘a prepositional equivalent of a word’ is used to denote a lexical-grammatical unit consisting of two or more components and correlate with a lexical preposition in terms of their semantic and grammatical properties. The purpose of this paper is to analyse translation peculiarities of Ukrainian prepositional equivalents of words into German. Based on the expression form of prepositional equivalents of words, Ukrainian prepositional equivalents of words may be relatively divided into several groups according to the type of their rendering into German. The practical value of this paper consists in establishing system links between the analyzed elements. The analysis of translation peculiarities of the Ukrainian prepositional equivalents of words into German brings us to a conclusion about the necessity of studying such constructions in other languages, which, as a result, will open new horizons for further theoretical observations on properties of the language system and actions of the language mechanism.
