The concept of anything like equivalent to the number zero as the aborigines of Venezuela

Journal Title: Revista Latinoamericana de Etnomatemática - Year 2012, Vol 5, Issue 2

Abstract

The present research intends to establish how the zero concept and its sign, unknown for the Venezuelan aborigines, have been substituted with the words: nothing, nobody, no one in several of their languages of the actual aborigines still living in Venezuela. So in relation to the nothing concept, which is equivalent in Spanish to number zero, is being used in a virtual sense by these ethnic groups. Nevertheless, in the Olmeca and later in the Maya cultures, they knew and used the sign and number zero in their numerical system, some centuries before than in Europe. And also, in the Inca Empire with their invention of the quipu and its variations, the zero was denoted, when leaving an empty space between groups of knots.
