THE CONCEPT OF TIME IN THE COGNITIVE ASPECT

Abstract
The article deals with the concept of “time” as a “limited resource” used by a person to achieve his goals. The concep- tualization of time in this way is considered relevant in the Western culture. The concept of time, which is considered to be one of the main, at the same time one of the simplest concepts, is abstract and is formed by means of structures of knowl- edge preserved for a long period in people’s memory. In English, the concept of “time” can be considered as “movement in space”, more precisely, as “a moving object”. It can be perceived in the idioms like time comes/flows/flies/speeds by. It should be noted that events, individual facts or movements are directed not only in space in a certain direction, but also, to some extent, they are directed towards the time. In many languages, the concept of time is expressed by various means. Prepositions in English can reflect a number of shades on the background of the concept of time. In English, this is achieved by the joint use of common nouns (including temporal nouns or other substantive parts of speech, numbers) and prepositions. Considering the concept sphere of time in the English language, in this article special attention is paid only to one aspect of the concept of time - a description of occurring (occurred) events, caused by movements made or circumstances is given on the time prism. The presence of various prefixes in English is due to the fact that time is perceived differently. Prepositions are units that differ in polysemy and rich metaphors. Polysemy is reflected in the dictionaries; however, the variations of their mean- ings and context are not always brought to the attention of the readers. Almost every preposition has a different number of meanings in various dictionaries. It is necessary to highlight and apply the number to the “represented lexeme”, because this is a highly complex problem in the semantics of prepositions. Every researcher who studies not only prepositions, but also the semantics of any unit of language can encounter such a problem. Here the boundaries between the meanings are not established, for this is the object of another study. The selection of the prepositions is related to the duration of the time interval.
