The Divine Attraction (Jadhbah) as a Possibility af Self-Revelation (Al-Taarruf) and Unveiling (Mukashafah) in Sufism

Journal Title: Marife Dini Araştırmalar Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 17, Issue 1

Abstract

The Divine attraction (jadhbah), which is considered as a degree of witnessing (mushahadah), is also seen as a beginning for attaining God. As a subject of various approaches such as the changes in attitude emanating from a spiritual fervor or immersion (istighraq) in view of the public, the Divine attraction denotes a state of rapture and the witnessing resulting from it that comes into being by the influence of manifestations reaching the heart suddenly. Although there exist different definitions concerning its essence, it is obvious that this attraction has some ambigious connotations as well. The sūfīs take the following saying of the Prophet as a starting point, "An attration among the attractions of the Merciful is equal to the deeds of mankind and the jinns", and they considered the mentioned attraction a degree which is bestowed to the attracted without his/her effort after being chosen by Him. That the seeker can advance fast during the Divine attraction compared with the spiritual journey (sulūq) in its usual course implies also a nature that transcends the spiritual stations (maqām). Although some of those attracted by the Divine attraction return to their normal lives, some of them remain at that state and cannot turn back to the state of sobriety (sahw). In the classical sūfī texts, there are various classifications concerning the Divine attraction and the attracted ones (madjdhūb). Especialy the quadripartite classification by al-Suhrawardī serves as an example for determining the place of the Divine attraction in the spiritual journey. In this article, some terms considered to be related with the Divine attraction such as diwāna, majnūn, bahlul will be defined, and the term attraction (jadhbah) and its importance in the the spiritual journey will be explained briefly. Then the classes of the attracted ones as well as the status of the attraction as a possibility of unveiling and the self-revelation (al-Taarruf) will be discussed.
