The dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) of Quintana Roo, Mexico: Annotated checklist of species and new records

Journal Title: REVISTA CHILENA DE ENTOMOLOGÍA - Year 2022, Vol 48, Issue 2

Abstract

Dung beetles of the subfamily Scarabaeinae are often used as focal organisms to assess anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity. The state distribution of Scarabaeinae in Mexico is quite heterogeneous; while some states stand out for their high diversity, others lack records or the available information is scarce and scattered. The present contribution is the first attempt to synthesize all available information on the subfamily Scarabaeinae in the state of Quintana Roo (Mexico) and to present an updated annotated checklist of species. The information was obtained from literature review, databases, as well as from the review of entomological material from samplings carried out in different zones of the state. The list is made up of a total of 52 species, belonging to 17 genera. Two species are recorded in Quintana Roo for the first time: Onthophagus (Onthophagus) carpophilus Pereira y Halffter, 1961 and Pseudocanthon perplexus (LeConte, 1887). The records of seven species are considered doubtful and are excluded from the list because their presence in the state does not fit within their typical range of distribution.
