THE EFFECT OF FILLER CONCENTRATION IN GREASE ON THE EFFICIENCY OF THE LUBRICATION OF STEEL SLIDING PAIRS WORKING IN MIXED LUBRICATION
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 244, Issue 4
Abstract
The paper presents the results of preliminary studies into the effect of different fillers (Bi2O3, Sb2O3, CuO, ZnO, TiO2) in calcium grease (Machine Grease 2) on the efficiency of the lubrication of steel sliding pairs. Tribological tests were carried out using a four-ball tester. Grease mixtures containing 4% and 10% by wt. of one of the fillers were tested. For purposes of comparison, the tribological characteristics of Machine 2 grease without any filler were determined. The efficiency of the greases was evaluated according to two criteria: limit seizure load Foz and limit seizure pressure poz. The experimental results were statistically processed at a confidence level of 95% using Student’s t-test. Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and bismuth trioxide were found to be poorly effective fillers of Machine Grease 2. Moreover, it was found that a change in the concentration of copper oxide or antimony trioxide from 4% to 10% results in an increase in lubrication efficiency.
