THE EFFECT OF REGULAR AEROBIC EXERCISE ON EMOTIONAL STATES IN WOMEN

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to establish the acute effect on state anxiety (i. e. the influence of a single session of physical exercise) and the chronic effect on mood states after completing 1-month programme of aerobics. Material and methods.Participants were three groups of women (each group n=25) ranging in age from 18 to 44. In first group the state anxiety level before and after single aerobics session was measured by STAI (Spielberger). In two remaining groups POMS (McNair, Lorr, Droppleman) was used to measure the level of mood states. Group A exercised once a week, group B – three times a week. Results. The results indicate the considerable decrease of state anxiety after a single session of aerobics, depending on its basic level. After a month of regular aerobics exercises the improvement of mood was observed: in group A positive mood states level increased, while in group B negative mood states level decreased. Changes of mood states correlate with openness to experience and state anxiety; can be predicted by exercise frequency and agreeableness.Conclusions. The aerobic exercise reduce state anxiety, especially in high anxious individuals. The emotional effect of exercise depends on its frequency and personality characteristics of individual.
