APPLICATION OF IMAGINATION TRAINING IN SPORTS. VISUALIZATION AIDING THE MOTOR BEHAVIORS TEACHING PROCESS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. The purpose of the paper is to present a possible application of imagination training to sports. The presentation of the imagination training as a means of support for the teaching process and preservation of motor behaviors is strongly emphasized.Material and methods. The presentation includes the results of an experiment that was run on two groups of sportsmen (trampolining – champion level) in order to check the accuracy of the execution of technical elements. Within the period of four days between the two tests, the sportsmen underwent a visualization training (five session lasting 10 minutes). The sportsmen were shown a footage presenting a perfect execution of the technical element that was also the main requirement of the test.Results. The results of the second phase have proved that the number of errors decreases significantly (the average 30% of errors decreased to zero).Conclusions. The experiment confirms the usefulness of imagination training as a way of supporting the teaching process of motor behavior. If the visualization training is planned and carried out promptly and properly, it could influence the performance. It can be especially helpful in elimination of technical errors which appear repeatedly in the sportsmen’s behavior, especially under stress. It is known that in such situations when sportsmen work under pressure, their deeply coded habits of movements, which function during long periods, may now be revealed. In such cases, visualisation training can be handled as a method which permits coding the correct motor habits, desirable for sportsmen.
