SURFACE ELECTROMYGRAPHY (SEMG) AND SEMG-BIO FEEDBACK UTILITY IN THERAPY OF MUSCLE ACTIVITY DISORDERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 1

Abstract

Surface electromyography (SEMG) and SEMG - biofeedback are diagnostic and therapeutic tools, which development dates back to approx. 1940. The article tells briefly about theoretical and practical bases of SEMG and SEMG – biofeedback. Measurements of bioelectric activity of muscles as well as changes in electric potentials in trigger points, enables objective evaluation of muscle and nerve function in patients who require rehabilitation. In clinical and sanatory rehabilitation centres there is a need for easily accessible, non-invasive muscular function diagnostics applied before the onset of treatment. and used for monitoring of treatment effectiveness. Abundant literature and ready to use protocols, as well as high effectiveness of SEMG, SEMG-biofeedback and ETS (Electromyographic Triggered Stimulation) form grounds for use of those methods in patients with para, tetra and hemiplegia, spasticity, muscle activity disorders (with motor and psychological base) as well as in therapy of pain. The results of author's own investigations using biofeedback technique and ETS (made with 2-channel SEMG NeuroTrac®ETS-Verity Medical Ltd.) in rehabilitation of perineal muscles in patients with incontinence are presented. The advantages of the used SEMG equipment and different parameters of muscle activity, measurable with the method were outlined.
