The effectiveness of fertilization with gamma irradiated pollen in plants of Brassica genus

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2009, Vol 30, Issue 1

Abstract

The effectiveness of pollination with irradiated pollen was evaluated in this work. The plant material used in this experiment consisted of 4 B. napus genotypes and B. carinata. The pollination with pollen treated with gamma rays in doses 25, 50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 Gy and control pollen was performed in the glasshouse which belongs to the Department of Genetic and Plant Breeding, University of Life Sciences in Poznań. The observations of pollen grains germination and pollen tube growth were done on the fixed material. Stimulating influence of gamma rays at 25 Gy dose on pollen tubes entering into the ovules in all tested genotypes was observed. The effectiveness of pollination was evaluated by counting the number of obtained embryos and regenerated plants. The biggest number of embryos was obtained in two summer rapeseed cultivars Topas and White Flower.
