The first double low variety of white mustard (Sinapis alba L.)

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2010, Vol 31, Issue 2

Abstract

Research aiming at the improvement of the quality of white mustard has been conducted at Department of Genetics and Breeding of Oilseed Crops in Poznań. Low erucic variety Bamberka was licenced in 2006. Glucosinolate content in seeds of this variety is as high as in traditional varieties. Seeds of this variety can be used for edible oil production but also in food as a spice and in pharmaceutical industry. Research works were conducted to obtain a variety which could be used as full oil-protein crop. Now a new double improved variety of white mustard has been bred, which has temporary name POH-209 and is characterized by very low erucic acid content in seeds oil and very low glucosinolate content in seeds and lack of sinalbin which is the main glucosinolate of white mustard. To reach this target the low erucic and low glucosinolate strains developed earlier were used. These strains were obtained by crossings of many Polish and foreign varieties and individual selection connected with inbreeding. The crosses between single improved strains allowed to select double improved strains with both desired qualities. The next step was to improve the agronomical value of double low strains. Agronomical value was estimated in field trails conducted in differentiated environments. The strain POH-209 with good seed yield was selected as the best one.Oil of this variety can be used for edible purposes and biofuel production. Meal or cake can be valuable feedstuff for animals.Strain POH-209 was applicated and accepted by COBORU (Research Centre for Cultivar Testing) in 2010 to its official trials as the first double improved variety of white mustard.
