The flexural properties of glass fiber-reinforced posts and cast posts: three-point bending test

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. For almost twenty years fibre-reinforced posts (FRC) have been used in reconstructive dentistry. Posts with higher flexural strength yield better flexural strength of tooth restorations.Aim of the study. To investigate and to compare the flexural strength and the flexural modulus of chosen twelve types of FRC and cast metal posts.Material and methods. Twelve types of fibre posts of different manufacturers present on our market were tested: Fibre Post (GC), Glassix and Glassix Plus (Harald Nordin), Rebilda Post (VOCO), DTLight Post (VDW), FibreKleer Serrated Post (Pentron), Luxapost Refill (DMG), ParaPost Fiber Lux (Coltene), Postec Plus (Ivoclar), RelyX (3M), EasyPost (Maillefer), X-Post (Dentsply). There were examined 120 units of posts, ten out of each type. Ten cylindric cast posts (diameter,1.2 mm; length, 20 mm), made of chrome-cobalt alloy, were also produced to form a control group. A universal testing machine Instron 4485 loaded at an angle of 90°, with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min was used for three-point bending test.Results. Within the limitations of this study the mean flexural strength of fibre posts was 888.8±178.2MPa. The highest values of flexural strength were demonstrated by DTLightPost (VDW) and the lowest by Glassix (HaraldNordin). The mean flexural strength of the control group amounted to 1957.2±1503MPa. The mean flexural modulus of FRC posts was 17.9±4.6GPa, and 71.32±3.7 GPa for cast metal posts. Conclusion. FRC posts showed a twofold lower strength and almost a fourfold lower flexural modulus than those yielded by cast posts.
