The Hermeneutic Method in Human Sciences: Wilhelm Dilthey and the Emergence of a New Epistemological Paradigm

Abstract
Abstract This study analyzes Wilhelm Dilthey's approach to methodology in the humanities. Dilthey's work was a major topic of debate among philosophers in the nineteenth century, a period marked by rising scientific progress and heightened interest in methodology. Dilthey focused on distinguishing between understanding and interpretation, advocating that understanding was the most suitable approach for the humanities. His work prompted a new epistemological question: how to examine the concepts and strategies of the hermeneutic approach to develop a fresh perspective on hermeneutics in the humanities. This includes theorizing and explaining the epistemology of the scientific approach to the humanities. The study concludes that Dilthey's project significantly advanced the humanities, helping to address methodological challenges by considering both epistemological and ontological dimensions in analyzing human phenomena. Ultimately, Dilthey's approach is seen not just as a method but as a comprehensive framework for historical consciousness. It emphasizes that understanding expression is essential for grasping truth and, consequently, for understanding life.
