The human factor as a determinant of trade-up effect in the manufacturing – logistics processes

Abstract

The trade-up effect is associated with the possibility of simultaneously quality improvement and costs reduction, unlike the generally occurring trade-off relationship, where higher quality is related to cost increases. In the production and logistics processes, trade-up effect can be achieved by applying lean manufacturing strategies. To a large extent, the human factor has an impact on this effect, because the commitment, responsibility, and creativity of employees, their ability to identify and solve problems, easy adaptation to change, flexibility, and the ability to work enable the implementation of elements of this strategy, such as kaizen, quality circles, self-control, jidoka, poka-yoke. Each of these elements, even applied separately, can be conducive to a trade-up effect. However, this possibility is increased many times if these elements are applied together in a coherent strategy, which is lean manufacturing. The human factor may also however, be a barrier in achieving efficiency in implementing this strategy.
