The impact of artificial UV radiation on wettability of oak (Quercus robur L.) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) wood after chemical modification and thermo - mechanical modification

Abstract

This paper presents investigation of the wettability of oak (Quercus robur L.) and black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) wood after chemical modification and thermo - mechanical modification. The wood was exposed to artificial UV radiation for 300 hours. Wettability was determined by means of measuring the contact angle for water and diiodomethane on the basis of the sessile drop method before and after exposure of wood samples to UV radiation. The contact angle was measured 3, 30 and 60 seconds after the reference droplet had been placed on the wood surface. The surface free energy of wood (SFE) was calculated using the Owens - Wendt method. The large surfaces of the samples had tangential - radial sections. The densification induced by chemical modification of oak wood led to a reduced wettability. This correlation was not observed in black locust wood. It was concluded that the UV radiation has a major impact on the contact angle for oak and black locust that underwent chemical and thermo - mechanical modification. It has been demonstrated that UV radiation does not significantly affect the surface free energy of oak and black locust after ammonia treatment. Keywords:
