The Impact of Blood Volume Pulls Biofeedback Training on Migraine Reduction: A Case Study on a Retired Elite Powerlifting Athlete
Journal Title: The 1st Annual Meeting of Georgian Center for Neuroscience Research - Year 2020, Vol 2, Issue 20
Abstract
Background and Aim: Tension headaches and migraine are the most common kind of headaches; especially in stressful situations. Career termination is a stressful situation that triggered some issues for many persons. Anxiety and migraine have been correlated and in some individuals they increased during retirement process. The aim of present study was assessing the impact of blood volume pulse (BVP) biofeedback training on reducing of intensity and frequency of migraine headache of an elite athlete of powerlifting which suffer from anxiety during retirement. Methods: Present study is an AB single subject design, case study. The participant was a 42 years old woman athletes that she was a champion in several national powerlifting competitions. She suffered from anxiety signs after her retirement. She completed a self-report migraine headache log in baseline and post-treatment. In this case, the asymmetry of Beta in frontal lobe was associated with anxiety; this indicator had been determined as protocol of neurofeedback training. The participant received 32 sessions of BVP-feedback training, 2 sessions per week. The data was analyzed with differences of baseline and post treatment divide baseline (A-B/A) as the ratio of improvement. Results: The results of present study demonstrate that participant had improvement in migraine intensity (d=0.38) and frequency (d=0.57). Conclusion: The results of present study have been indicating that neurofeedback training can significantly reduce anxiety and help to elite athletes for overcoming anxiety and related states of career terminate
