Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2014, Vol 27, Issue 9
Abstract
Introduction. Sleep disorders of breathing (SDB) in children is a clinical problem that is nowadays becoming well recognized both by patients and doctors. It can be the basis for the diagnosis of Obturative Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), which may be a risk factor for various conditions, including hypertension, obesity, behaviour disorders.Aim. To evaluate the prevalence of symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing in children. Analysis of the clinical management with children in whom the symptoms were observed.Material and methods. In May 2012 a random questionnaire was given to parents of 203 children aged 6 to 12 years (101 boys and 102 girls, average age 6.5). The questions referred to the pregnancy, the neonatal period, the present health state and the occurrence of symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing. In the case when such symptoms were present, parents were asked what clinical procedure was applied.Results. Parents more often notice the night symptoms of breathing problems during sleep rather than the daytime ones. Among the most commonly observed symptoms at night were: moving the legs (36%; 73/203), snoring (19.2%; 39/203) and waking up (11.8%; 24/203). The cooccurrence of two nocturnal symptoms was noted in 30/203 children (14.8%) and of three symptoms in 8/203 children (3.9%). The most frequent daytime symptoms included: concentration problem (25.4%; 52/203), irritability (17.1%; 35/203), fatigue (16.6%; 34/203), excessive arousal (13.7%; 28/203) and anxiety (12.2%; 25/203). The parents noticed the problem of disordered breathing during sleep in 5.9% (12/203) children. Eventually, further diagnostics included two children, representing 1% of respondents. Polysomnography was not performed in any child.Conclusions. Parents often do not connect the night or the day symptoms with the possible development of OSAS. Although certain parents reported the problem to their physician, they were not referred for polysomnography, which demonstrates the lack of knowledge about the proceedings in the cases of suspected OSAS.
