THE INFLUENCE OF CHOSEN ASPECTS OF PLAY IN DEFENCE ON THE LEVEL OF EXECUTIVE ATTENTION CONCENTRATION IN MEN'S BASKET-BALL

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The authors assessed the realisation of chosen tasks related to play in defence and their influence on executive attention concentration in basketball teams.Executive attention is understood as a system controlling human cognitive and behavioral processes. One of the most imporant features of top basketball player is the ability to concentrate attention for a long period of time together with its divisibility and transferability which all are determined by high level of executive attention. The paper was aimed at demonstrating changeability of executive attention during realisation of defense tasks in team game. Material and methods. The primary point in the study methodology was Smith’s coefficient which describes number of points achieved in action, and its average value is 1. Loss of ball or inaccurate throw is connected with loss of a point, and obtaining of ball (steal or rebound) is connected with gained point. Study observations involved Polish Championship team Prokom Trefl Sopot, silver medal team Anvil Włocławek, bronze medal team Energia Czarni Słupsk and fourth position team Polpak S.A. Świecie.Results. The highest level of executive attention concentration in the first round was achieved by Energia Czarni Słupsk with mean number of –31.9 k-points which meant that this team made the lowest number of errors. The best result in the second round (-28.2) and in play-off (-31.2) was achieved by Anvil Włocławek. The highest number of points was lost by the teams due to “lack of presssure” and “letting in three point field”.Conclusions. The used methodology allowed for obtaining current information concerning errors made by competitors resulting in loss of points as well as for the assessment of executive attention concentration.Executive attention concentration during playing is a basic psychomotor characteristic of basketball player. It is also one of the most important causes of player’s psychophysical fatigue. After an important match, physiological norm is reached rapidly by a player, but psychological components of fatigue (attention, reaction time) are decreased for a longer period of time.
