THE INFLUENCE OF CUTTING FLUID APPLICATION ON SURFACE LAYER CONDITION OF GEARS GENERATED BY HOBBING
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 241, Issue 1
Abstract
In this paper, experimental results concerning influence of different strategies of cutting fluid application on surface layer condition of the gear’s tooth flank generated by hobbing are described. Experimental tests were carried out for wet machining (WM), minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) and cooled compressed air methods (SSP). 42CrMo4 steel gears after hardening and tempering, were manufactured by finishing hobbing. HS6-5-2 hobs was used without coatings. Surface roughness parameters were measured on the both sides of gear’s tooth flank. Additionally, metallography, macro- and microscopy analysis together with hardness profiles were made. The findings in the present investigation show that it is possible to replace conventional cutting fluid (oil) in wet machining without deterioration of surface layer conditions with applying environmentally and human friendly alternatives of cooling and lubricating methods.
