THE INFLUENCE OF SOME SOMATIC PARAMETERS ON THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM IN 14-15 YEARS OLD GIRLS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 6
Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of somatic constitution on the respiratory system in 14-15 years old girls. The authors of the article wanted to show that the anatomy of the chest may influence the function of the lungs, as well as the values of the parameters which are used for objective assessment of efficiency, for which fitness of the respiratory system is one of the more important components.Material and methods. The trial comprised of two parts, where the subjects were two groups of pubertal girls: 14 years old (group I, n=25) and 15 years old (group II, n=25). Trial methodology included measurement of body hight and body mass, measurement around the chest (at rest, maximal, minimal) to calculate movability of the chest. The second part spirometry was conducted to estimate: vital capacity - VC, inspiratory capacity – IC, expiratory reserve volume - ERV and first second forced expiration - FEV1.Results. Average measured body hight is similar to that measured in population study. Vital capacity (VC) and first second forced expiration (FEV1) value are normal. Despite of differences in measured parameters, there were not significant difference in any of them between both groups. Vital capacity showed moderate and important statistic meaning with first second forced expiration. These results indicate that first second forced expiration (FEV1), which testify breathing muscle strength show strong relationship with vital capacity (VC).Conclusion. Despite the discrepancies between the somatic parameters, the results of the research show a lack of statistically important differences in the range of all the measured spirometric parameters, between group I and group II of the examined girls. Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1), which indicates the strength of the respiratory muscles, shows a strong relation with Vital Capacity (VC).
