THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACES FLUORINATION ON TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF RUBBER

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 232, Issue 4

Abstract

In this paper, the influence of surface fluorination acrylic rubber (ACM), butadiene – acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) and its hydrogenated analogue (HNBR) on their tribological properties and resistance to ageing in contact with biodiesel are presented. Tribological behaviour, swelling data, and mechanical properties of the vulcanizates were determined. The mechanism of modification was studied by Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Tribological characteristics were collected with a steel block-on-rubber ring instrument. Despite a general lack of protection against swelling in bio-fuel, fluorination has to be verified positively in terms of lowering friction. Probably this is the effect of a graphite-like layer created on the surface of rubber due to the treatment.
