THE INFLUENCE OF THE PULSED ANODISING PROCESS PARAMETERS ON THE SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY OF ANODIC OXIDE COATINGS ON ALUMINIUM

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 243, Issue 3

Abstract

The purpose of the preset study was to evaluate the influence of the pulsed anodising process parameters on the surface topography of anodic oxide coatings on the aluminium alloy EN-AW 5251. The pulsed anodising process was conducted using a rectangular current waveform of variable frequency (100–0,2 Hz) and a variable duty cycle of the pulse (100–40%). Measurement of the anodic oxide coating, Al2O3, surface roughness (2D and 3D) was made using the Form Talysurf Series 2 profilographometer. Evaluation of the Al2O3 coating morphology was made by image analysis, based on surface pictures acquired by means of a scanning electron microscope, Philips XL 30 ESEM/TMP. The research results prove that the application of the pulse method with a rectangular current waveform for the anodization of aluminium alloys allows a reduction of the amplitude parameters of surface roughness and a modification of anodic oxide coating porosity.
