THE INFLUENCE OF WHOLE-BODY CRYOSTIMULATION ON BLOOD ENZYMATIC ANTIOXIDANT BARRIER OF KAYAKERS DURING TRAINING
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. There is still growing interest in whole-body cryostimulation among sportsmen, coaches and sport physicians. Successful application of cryogenic temperatures in the treatment of sports injuries is well documented and reported, but less is known about its beneficial effects in biogeneration and overtraining prevention in sportsmen. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of whole-body cryostimulation on the activity of antioxidant in enzymes in peripheral blood of kayakers during training.Material and methods. Nineteen kayakers of Polish Olimpic Team were subjected to 10-days training and each training session was preceded by exposure of the whole body to extremely low temperatures in form of twice a day, 3 minutes cryochamber session in temperatures ranging from -120°C to -140°C. Four months before training period associated with cryostimulation, control training cycle without whole-body cryostimulation was performed. Venous blood was taken at the beginning and after the sixth and tenth day of both training cycles. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were estimated in erythrocytes.Results. Comparing training without cryostimulation and supported by extremely low temperatures stimulation, SOD activity was 27% (p<0.001) lower after the sixth day and 43% (p<0.05) higher after the tenth day of training with whole-body cryostimulation. There were no statistically significant changes of CAT activity both after the training without cryostimulation and with whole-body cryostimulation (the activity was slightly lower after the training preceded by cryogenic stimulation). Comparing both types of training the activity of GPx after sixth and tenth day was lower with cryostimulation. The GPx activity was 42% (p<0.05) lower after the sixth day and 55% (p<0.05) lower after next four days.Conclusions. The increrase of antioxidant enzymes activity after training without cryostimulation confirms intensified generation of reactive oxygen species induced by exercise. Training supported with whole-body cryostimulation faciliates preservation of prooxidant-antioxidant balance.
