THE KAWASE APPROACH TO PETROCLIVAL LESIONS OF SKULL BASE: A LANDMARK IN SKULL BASE SURGERY

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

The petroclival area is a complex region situated at the junction of adjacent parts of sphenoid, temporal and occipital bones. A variety of pathologies may originate in the petroclival area, including meningiomas, schwannomas, chordomas, chondrosarcomas, carcinomas, aneurysms and others. Developments in skull base surgery, neuroradiology and intensive care have led to a breakthrough in the management of petroclival lesions. Different surgical approaches exist to access the petroclival area. Kawase et al described a modification of the middle fossa approach, which is considered a landmark in the history of skull base surgery. The aim of this review is to present a detailed discussion of the technique and relevant surgical anatomy.
