Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 248

Abstract

The growth of the new quality requirements to the intercultural communication aimed at achieving mutual understanding demands the consideration of extralinguistic and lingual means which explain the cultural, social and ethnic differences in communication with different countries. The purpose of the article is to determine and contrast linguo-communicative values of the Ukrainian and English culture. Among the linguo-communicative values that have the greatest influence on the people behavior in the English communication style there is distance or personal autonomy. One of the key value concepts of the linguo-conceptology of the English people which undoubtedly affects the totality of culturally marked language and speech means is the concept PRIVACY that represents the human right to have independence, personal autonomy. The socio-cultural value called by the word “privacy” is a constituent of the linguo- mentality of the Englishmen whose sense of personal freedom and independence is very well-developed. It is noted that the British respect their rights to have private life and private space. Otherwise the Ukrainians are characterised as inquisitive and curious people. For the Ukrainians to find out everything how another person is means to show their concern but not to hurt or interfere in the latter’s personal space. More to that introversion focused on the need of social resonance, self-expression is a typical linguo-communicative value of the Ukrainian linguo-cultural community. The equality and the respectful attitude to everyone, regardless a status and a social position are linguo-communicative values that influence the linguo-communicative behavior of the British. Another important psychological feature that significantly affects verbal behavior standards of the Ukrainians and the British, is emotionality of the former and restraint of the latter linguo-cultural community. It is noted that cordocentrism (Latin: “cordis” – the “heart”, “centrum” – “center of circle”; “the heart as the unity and integrity of the person”) is a linguo-communicative value of the Ukrainians which dominates in the Ukrainian mentality. Another different feature for both cultures is a smile which is welcome among the British people and not obligatory among the other linguo-cultural community which is not a sign of a bad and rude behavior or attitude. Thus, the linguo-communicative values of the Ukrainian and English cultures are significantly different. While the Ukrainian culture is characterized by such linguo- communicative values as sensitive introversion that requires a contact with other people, emotionality, cordocentrism, curiosity, for the English culture such linguo-communicative values as privacy, restraint, equality are typical. The prospect of the research is a comparative analysis of the English and Ukrainian business language linguistic means the use of which is caused by the linguo-communicative values of the Ukrainian and British linguo-cultural communities.
