The Mechanisms of Creation and Semantic and Pragmatic Specificity of Functioning Connotative Meanings in the English Military Discourse
Journal Title: Вісник Житомирського державного університету імені Івана Франка - Year 2017, Vol 86, Issue 2
Abstract
The article focuses on the ways of forming and contexts of functioning the additional meanings of language units in professional communication based on the functional, conventionally and historically symbolic analogy. Additional interpretive elements of the meaning of a significate are formed due to metaphorical reinterpretation of the component meanings of the attributive-kernel models of free word-combinations with the preservation of their formal-structural characteristics in the case of formal coincidence with the phrase, which has undergone a semantic reinterpretation of its components and became a phraseological unit. The motivation of the emergence of such neologisms is the necessity of creating additional denominations in the system of conventional signs which would be convenient in operational use due to its concise form and figurative expressiveness, which optimizes the functional use of communicative signs. Often the incentive for active involvement of connotative semantics is the necessity of the language objectification and description of such moments in the socio-political and military spheres of life, when the reality appears in a dimension of its own categories, in contrast to the notions, expectations and forecasts of subjective perception. The connotative effect of secondary nominations with expressive-evaluative and figurative motivation makes possible the existence of parallel expressively marked lexical and phraseological units – military jargonisms against the neutral significative-referential background of terms . The extension of the range of connotative possibilities is also realized due to the use of occasional and stylistically-marked signs of expressive objectification of the world’s perception specific patterns in the functionally-diversified collective of soldiers.
