The Mental Model of the Communicative Situation TEMPTATION

Abstract

The research deals with the formation of the general structure of the communicative situation TEMPTATION in the form of a frame model (a case study of the English cinema discourse). The frame structure of communicative situation TEMPTATION is represented with the three main centers – TEMPTATION PARTICIPANTS, PARTICIPANTS’ ACTIONS and SETTING. The agent’s actions are always motivated by his needs, which shape the goal and define the tactics, localized in the model of the communicative situation in the slots SOMETHING (need) → SOMETHING (goal) → MANNER (way) → SOMETHING (result). Victim’s communicative behavior is localized in the following slot’s order: AS MUCH / SOMETHING (tool-attractor) → SOMETHING (target need) → SOMETHING (desire). It arises under the pressure of unrealized needs, schematically localized in the slot NEED. SOMETHING (barrier) → MANNER (way) → SOMETHING (result). Slot DESIRE is representative of both participants. Needs are the targets of agent’s regulatory impact. If the degree, represented by slot DESIRE is higher than that expressed by slot BARRIER, the agent achieves the desired result: (NEED (target) → DESIRE (higher degree) → BARRIER (lower degree) → positive RESULT) → meets the agent’s NEEDS. In case when the degree, represented by slot DESIRE is lower than that expressed by slot BARRIER, the agent does not achieve the desired result: (NEED (target) → DESIRE (lower degree) → BARRIER (higher degree) → negative RESULT → agent’s unrealized NEEDS. The generalized mental model of the communicative situation TEMPTATION is based on the subjective mental models formed by identifying relevant characteristics to temptation.
