The metabolic syndrome in organ transplant recipients

Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2010, Vol 23, Issue 3

Abstract

Despite an impressive improvement in short-term renal allograft survival, long-time survival remains curtailed. Approximately half of all transplanted organs are lost within ten years after transplantation. Organ transplant recipients are at disproportionately high risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases, which arises from higher prevalence of well-established risk factors such as hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes, hiperlipidemia or obesity. These disorders constitute a metabolic syndrome, which refers to a clustering of risk factors of metabolic origin that promote the development of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and is also associated with graft dysfunction and decreased survival among transplant recipients.
