Abstract
The article is devoted to the study of the polysemantic metaphor of cannibalism as nationalism in the Hawkes’s novel «Cannibal». In his pseudo-historical text, the American writer raises the most burning problems of modern society, showing how ideological contradictions can lead to the folly of a whole nation. Cannibalism in the novel functions as a symbol of the lack of humanity and humanistic ideals in the tumultuous times of historical shifts.
