The Metaphor of Organism and Metaphor of Culture by G. Morgan in the Interpretation of Arka Pilgrims’ House in Lichen

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2010, Vol 9, Issue 3

Abstract

Metaphors and analogies nowadays appear as the most important research instruments in management sciences. Expressions taken from the complexity theory or chaos theory describe realities, which apparently escape from dynamic concepts of non-linear systems. The purpose of this article is the attempt to utilize metaphors proposed by Gareth Morgan, the metaphor of organism and metaphor of culture, in interpretation of Arka Pilgrims’ House, an organisation separated from the structures of the Congregation of Marian Fathers in Poland. Arka Pilgrims’ House, running in an unstable environment, behaves as a dynamic organism, combined with the system of references and relations depending from one another. Success and effectiveness of the pilgrim house not only depend on its managers but on values and standards accepted by the employees. The world of culture, being the foundation of the organisation, is expressed in various ways: it can be perceived in behaviour of employees, their relations, judgments, approaches, the ways of solving of disputes, the manner of arrangement of work places. Management of organisation’s needs is one of the most important aspects in operating activity. The encouragement to involve employees in improvement of the quality of services, innovations, improvement of communication and organizational culture, already on linear positions, has other dimension, not only personal, but economical, within the frameworks of operating management. Despite the possibility to utilize various metaphors of the organization, it seems that it is the expression, which presents the organisation as an organism, and the metaphor of cultures, that most completely interpret Arka pilgrim’s house in Licheń as an organisation, and form strategic and operating management systems.
