THE MOE-FICATION OF THE WESTERN EUROPEAN PHILOSO-PHERS

Journal Title: Молодий вчений - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 45

Abstract

The study analyzes book “Me, Heidegger and Tsundere” released in 2011 in Japan. The book was written by Japanese writer Junji Hotta. The book tells the story of the Japanese salary man who accidently transforms into a school boy. The school boy goes to school where famous the Western European philosophers (Descartes, Spinoza, Berkley, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Heidegger) look like anime-and-manga style girls. Each of these girls tells him about its own philosophy. However, the book is famous not because of its outlines of Western European philosophy but because of its visual content created by Japanese manga artist Ayumu Shouji. Ayumu Shouji “moe-ficated” the Western European philosophers having transformed them into the anime-and-manga style girls with moe-qualities. He imaged the philosophers as archetypical anime-and-manga heroines: Rene Descartes is a prideful lady; Benedict Spinoza is a meganekko (a girl with glasses); George Berkley and David Hume are the twins, lily sisters with lesbian relationship; Immanuel Kant is a sempai, senior classmate; Georg Hegel is an older (big) sister; Friedrich Nietzsche is yandere; and Martin Heidegger is a chairwoman of the club.
